Apophasis

He’s not dreaming of a white Christmas
or wishing upon a star. He doesn’t even
read his horoscope in the Sunday paper
nor is he the least bit concerned that today
marks an ideal time to invest in new relationships.

This is because he’s not really
into the whole concept of days
let alone hours, minutes, or seconds.
Though he’s never late for work
nor forgotten an appointment.

Each moment he is not not
exactly where he is and should be.
He doesn’t miss his cue and
doesn’t trip when coming on stage.

Granted, that’s because he’s never
not been on stage
but there are moments when
he’s not in the spotlight.

That’s not to say he hides in the shadows
only that we can’t see him
which tells more about us than him—
a subject on which I have barely
scratched the surface here.

I haven’t mentioned, for instance
that he is not a he
nor even a singular pronoun
and is most certainly not confined
to the pinprick of my imagination.

Of course, I’m welcome to look for him
to search the heavens
but he’s not out there
like a star awaiting discovery.
No, he’s not that far away at all.
