In the Name of the Father, the Son, and Wile E. Coyote

I don’t recall
when you assigned me
the role of the Son

but I do remember
when you sent the Spirit
from on high—

our kid sister’s Barbie
dive-bombing me
during our Sunday bath.

Wingless and without
proclamation, this “dove”
attacked more than alighted

upon my head.
This was after
you baptized me

in your name
and the names of a whole cast
of Looney Tunes characters.

As I went under
again and again,
I couldn’t help

but wonder when Jesus
first discovered
he could walk on water.

Was he as young as me
sneaking off
to race a few ducks

on some sea somewhere?
I bet he always let them win,
much like

he would later
let everyone everywhere
win.
